Precipitation Hardening Nickel Superalloy | ZYTC Alloy

ZYTC Alloy, a professional Chinese manufacturer and supplier of premium aerospace-grade nickel-based superalloys, offers high-performance Udimet® 520 precipitation-hardenable wrought nickel superalloy products including bars, plates and forgings. As an upgraded high-temperature alloy optimized to remedy the performance limitations of traditional Udimet 500, Udimet 520 delivers exceptional high-temperature mechanical stability, superior corrosion resistance and excellent hot workability. Widely used in aviation, aerospace and industrial gas turbine hot-section components, this alloy is a reliable solution for long-term service under extreme high-temperature and high-stress operating environments.

Material Overview & Core Advantages

Udimet® 520 is a vacuum-melted, precipitation-hardening nickel-based superalloy engineered for outstanding structural stability in elevated-temperature environments. It is specifically designed for continuous service within 760¡ãC to 927¡ãC (1400¡ãF¨C1700¡ãF), exhibiting excellent tensile properties, creep resistance, stress rupture strength and fatigue performance. Compared with conventional Udimet 500 alloy, Udimet 520 features upgraded ductility, thermal stability and comprehensive mechanical performance, solving many high-temperature strength and processability shortcomings of its predecessor.

The alloy maintains highly stable mechanical behavior at room temperature and below 760¡ãC, with excellent oxidation resistance, thermal processing performance and structural durability, making it ideal for critical hot-end components requiring long-cycle and high-load operation.

Fabrication Performance & Processability

One of the most prominent advantages of Udimet 520 is its excellent comprehensive processability, including superior forgeability, formability, weldability and machinability, allowing flexible manufacturing of complex precision components.

1. Forging & Forming

Udimet 520 retains good ductility at high temperatures and supports stable hot forging production. Conventional metal forming methods can be applied easily. With reasonable equipment power and professional processing parameters, the alloy avoids high-temperature embrittlement and maintains uniform structural performance after forming.

2. Cold Working

Standard cold forming procedures are applicable for Udimet 520. To prevent surface galling and improve forming quality, heavy-duty lubricants and soft die materials are recommended. Tooling with generous radii and clearances can effectively optimize cold forming results and reduce material stress concentration.

3. Welding Performance

Udimet 520 supports multiple mature welding processes, including GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) and SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding). Before welding, the material surface must be thoroughly cleaned to remove paint, oil, crayon marks and other contaminants to ensure high-quality, defect-free weld joints with stable strength and corrosion resistance.

4. Machinability

Although Udimet 520 can be machined with conventional cutting tools, it features high strength, slight gumminess and work-hardening characteristics. For milling, turning and grinding operations, water-based coolant is strongly recommended. For drilling, boring, broaching and tapping, heavy-duty lubricants are required. Professional rigid tooling and stable equipment operation can effectively minimize work-hardening influence and machining chatter.

Professional Heat Treatment Process

Udimet 520 obtains its peak high-temperature strength and structural stability through standardized annealing and multi-stage aging hardening treatment.

Annealing Treatment

Heat at 1107¡ãC (2025¡ãF), followed by rapid air cooling to refine grain structure and homogenize material properties.

Multi-Stage Aging Hardening

Udimet 520 achieves graded precipitation strengthening via three-step air cooling aging treatment:
  • 1107¡ãC (2025¡ãF) / 4 hours, air cool
  • 843¡ãC (1550¡ãF) / 24 hours, air cool
  • 760¡ãC (1400¡ãF) / 16 hours, air cool
After complete heat treatment, the alloy forms uniform precipitated phases, significantly improving high-temperature creep resistance, fatigue strength and lasting structural stability.
